Waste
Management
Nicole, authorized recycling contractor of the Environmental Protection Department, provides systematic waste collection services to over 100,000 households throughout Hong Kong. The collected recyclables primarily include waste papers, waste plastics, waste metals and used clothing.
Additionally, Nicole also holds “Barter Activity” booths at designated estates periodically in order to raise citizens’ awareness towards waste reduction. On the Day of Activity, citizens can contribute their separated recyclables to the booth in exchange of some daily necessities such as stationery, rice and beverage. The rationale behind this activity is to urge the citizens to separate the waste at source and, more importantly, convince them that proper recycling can achieve waste reduction.
Source Separation
Programme
The rationale behind the Programme is straight forward. Landfills are running out of space so we need to reduce our waste. By getting people to separate their waste for recycling, it will help to minimize the amount of waste disposed into landfills.
The main objective of the Programme is to facilitate residents to separate waste at source by encouraging and assisting property management companies to provide waste separation facilities on each building floor, and broaden the types of recyclables to be recovered. All residents need to do is to separate their waste into categories such as waste paper, metals and plastics, and then take them to designated locations on each floor. Under the Programme, a diverse range of recyclables is being recovered in housing estates, such as plastic shopping bags, compact discs, light bulb, batteries, second hand clothes, on top of the basic collection of waste paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
